What the home video producer has been able to come up with has changed a lot during the last ten years. The personal computers available to home users in the beginning of the 1990s, where nowhere near what is required to work with video. Today is another story of course, as PCs capable of editing video more or less like the pro's do is available at affordable prices. Now let's have a brief look at video editing of today, from the viewpoint of the typical consumer.

A New Level Of Convenience

Non-linear editing is the term used for the process used by state-of-the-art video editing software. What that implies is that all of the material is on tap all the time - in what order it was filmed does not matter - unlike the older (tape based) linear editing where you had to go to the specific location of a particular shot manually.

The most obvious benefit over the older systems is of course the one of speed, but also one of quality. Whe tapes are used the content to be edited are transfered first to another tape and the to a master tape. Each time the material is copied there is a slight deterioration in quality, a process called generation loss.

A non-linear system maintains the original quality of the recording, as all the system basically does is create a list that dictates in what order the source material is to be played back.

A Fast Enough Computer

When it comes to editing video, particularly HD quality, there is no such thing as a "too powerful" computer. Still, provided that your PC isn't many years old, chances are that it can become a good platform to run video editing software on. By adding more RAM and possibly another or a bigger hard drive you may also be able to bring your computer up to meet the requirements.

Although there used to be a huge difference, today it really doesn't matter that much if your PC is Windows based (XP, Vista) or running Mac OS - it is mostly a matter of personal preference, and good, stable video editing solutions are available on both platforms.

Building Your Own Videostudio

How much you are willing to spend on hardware and software will naturally dictate what quality you will achieve in the end. If all you desire is to be able to display your finished movies to family and friends, you may very well be satisfied with less advanced solutions. Then Again, if the end result has to be of commercially viable quality, it will require a bigger investment on your part.

Still, as small handheld cameras capable of recording in high definition are now available a consumer friendly prices, and affordable video editing software offers more and more capabilities, there is really no reason that even movies intended only for family use can look more professional than ever before.
